Functional Pottery Class
About the class
This class is designed around the fundamentals of functional pottery—cups, bowls, plates, and other usable ceramic forms—while giving students the freedom to grow into their own creative voice. During the first few weeks, beginner students work through shared foundational projects focused on core hand-building, including pinch, slab, and coil construction and wheel throwing techniques. These structured exercises build confidence, consistency, and an understanding of form and function in clay.
As students become comfortable with the basics, they transition into guided independent work, developing their own project ideas with individualized support and instruction. More experienced students who already have a foundation are welcome to begin working on personal projects from the start, with the instructor providing feedback, technical guidance, and refinement as needed. Throughout the session, glazing days are scheduled as pieces come out of the kiln, giving students the opportunity to add color, finish their work, and complete the full ceramic process from clay to final fired piece.

Open to beginners through advanced students. No experience required.

Includes 6lbs of clay per month + glaze (students will have the opportunity to purchase more clay if desired for an additional cost. 6lbs of clay will make about two projects. Projects take roughly 2-3 weeks to create.)

About the Instructor
Junko Hampton
Junko Hampton is an award-winning ceramic artist, educator, and the owner of Kichi Pottery in Navarre, Florida. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art from Kyoto University of Art and Design and further refined her ceramics practice in Japan while studying pottery under Mr. Ohara at Chura Umi Gama Studio in Okinawa. Junko creates both functional and decorative ceramic work, teaches pottery classes for children and adults, offers kilnshare services, and provides kintsugi repair. Known for her deep technical training, calm teaching style, and attention to traditional craftsmanship, she brings a strong foundation in Japanese ceramic arts into an accessible, hands-on learning environment for students of all levels.
